Abstract Indian women are under-represented in parliament. A look at women’s participation in General Election shows steady growth in participation in voting and reduction of the gender gap at the voter level in the electoral process. This article is based on the election commission’s report on electoral participation and representation of women from 1952 to the recently held general elections in 2014. It offers a detailed analysis of women’s political participation and representation from being women electorate to voters, from women as candidates to women as political representatives in Lok Sabha. It is argued that due to various social and political factors women face a democratic deficit in government. The descriptive representation of women is missing. Despite an increase in voting percentage in the recently held assembly and general elections, there are few women as candidates in the electoral process and even fewer women legislators.
