Title

PRODUCTION OF BIOGAS BY FLOATING DRUM MECHANISM AND USING IT IN C.I. ENGINE TO DETERMINE THE PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF ENGINE IN DUAL FUEL MODE

Abstract

The enormous growth in industries and increase in population are the main reasons for heavy depletion of fossil fuels. Though large amount of biomass is available, it is not properly utilized for the energy conversion. The main objective of this work is to produce biogas from organic waste, utilizing it in C.I. engine to estimate the performance of the engine and thereby reduce the usage of other fuels affecting the environment. Another reason is that instead of disposing the organic waste in landfill, this can be converted into a useful product so that it can be used for various purposes as a fuel alone or along with other fuels. Octane number of biogas is also high. Hence if used in engine applications, the compression ratio will be high. The project involves determining the various parameters required for design of biogas plant, methodologies, constructional features, etc. It includes study of various technologies that can be implemented for the biogas production. It also includes selection of the best appropriate method for future scope. The biogas based plants can be used for following applications: 1. Biogas when compressed can replace CNG for use in vehicles. 2. The bottled biogas facilitates to be transported at the point of application which can be used for heat or power generation. 3. Implementation of a biogas plant can help to reduce the use of petroleum based fuels and thus can reduce the cost as well as the resulting pollution from the petroleum based fuels. Key Words: biogas production from different potential substrates, technologies of production, anaerobic digestion(AD) technology, constructional features and dimensions of a biogas plant
