Title

A Comparitive Review Of Nitrate Removal Methods From Groundwater

Authors

Abstract

Nitrate levels in our water resources have increased in many areas of the world largely due to applications of inorganic fertilizer and animal manure in agricultural areas. The regulatory limit for nitrate in public drinking water supplies was set to protect against infant methemoglobinemia, but other health effects were not considered. Risk of specific cancers and birth defects may be increased when nitrate is ingested under conditions that increase formation of N-nitroso compounds. Nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) are naturally occurring inorganic ions that are part of the nitrogen cycle. Microbial action in soil or water decomposes wastes containing organic nitrogen into ammonia, which is then oxidized into nitrite and nitrate. Because nitrite is easily oxidized to nitrate, nitrate is the compound predominantly found in decomposed domestic wastes. Application of nitrogenous fertilizers or animal organic wastes can also raise the concentration of nitrate in water. Nitrate containing compounds in the soil are generally soluble and readily migrate with ground water. The atmospheric nitrogen gets ammonified by micro-organisms and leads to conversion to nitrites and nitrates through nitrification. The present study is helpful in proper assessment and use of available techniques of nitrate removal from groundwater. This paper reviews the developments in the field of nitrate removal processes which can be effectively used for denitrifying ground water as well as industrial water.
