Title

Women and partition:Short stories of Saadat Hasan Manto

Authors

Abstract

The sufferings and sacrifices of women during the trauma of partition in 1947,included abduction, rape, forcible conversion, molestation and death.Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru candidly described women as the suffers of the partition event. The women were subjected to maximum humiliation and torture. Their agony can be judged by the fact that a number of women jumped into wells to save their honour. It is as unbelievable today as it was as that time. But fortunately Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru visited the village on 14th.March,1947 and he was told about the incidents of ladies jumping into wells. His staff photographer took photographs of the bottom of the well with the help of a flashlight. These photographs showed the decomposed limbs of the bodies. The Government of India and Pakistan, who had recently taken over from the British, had no comprehension of the enormity of the situation. My paper highlightes such sufferings of women during partition in the two short stories of Saadat Hasan Manto. In "Khol Do", Manto narrates a story focusing the blood-curdling tale of Sakina, who was raped so many times that even after being rescued and taken to a hospital, when the doctor asked someone to 'Open the window',she like a machine opened her pants. Another story of Manto, "Kali Salwar" is the story of Sultana,a small town prostitute, who became utterly disillusioned after coming to the big city of Bombay with her pimp. Her business declines badly, and her mood gets channeld through her longing for a "Kali Salwar".
