Title

MANAGING THE CONFLICTING EXPECTATION OF WORKER AND THE WORKPLACE- A HR CHALLENGE

Abstract

Sweeping demographic changes across the developed and developing world has placed greater pressure on organizations both in government and private sectors. They need to initiate and implement creative solution to educate, integrate and retain a rapidly changing and diverse working population. It is imperative that the HR understands what is most valued by these workers. Is it compensation, or prestige or perhaps autonomy at work? HR will have to adapt their incentives, benefit, policies and retention strategies for workers that are not just driven by financial compensation. The workers should be provided with a positive work environment with challenging, interesting tasks, flexible scheduling, job sharing, reduced work week and a clear sense of direction and leadership. As the workforce also includes women employees and the youth, it becomes more difficult to manage their expectations because of their different work attitudes. Women at workplace should be treated and paid equally for equal work. Organizations need to provide women with friendly facilities, support, better work culture and a congenial work environment to give their best. With changing times, employees are changing, it is important that not only younger employees need to be understood, but also the more e and senior employees who need more understanding to embrace the change. The senior leaving the organization should set an example for their juniors. Companies also need to understand which new skill and training to be provided so that they feel comfortable with their younger Colleagues. As business is expanding and hiring is done beyond the boundaries, HR to scrutinize job qualification and take more informed decisions. An understanding of qualification and skill set will help to execute the work better. Thus respecting the individual differences will benefit the workplace by creating a competitive edge and increasing work productivity. The workplace has undergone a tremendous change with a changed work culture and work environment. Workers are no more unaware about their jobs and the facilities offered therein, they are highly educated and have the required knowledge to grab opportunities and negotiate with their employers. Today’s workplace has become so clumsy and uncomfortable that employees feel suffocated and stressed. But few organizations have developed a healthy workplace where a employee can not only work smoothly but also develop oneself mentally and emotionally. With growing technology, the nature of work has also changed, bringing changes in work processes and methods. Organizations need to create a lively work environment with fun at workplace. Companies need to adopt a transparent communication system and proper sharing of information. HR needs to be culturally sensitive to stimulate innovation and creativity. An environment of trust and cooperation needs to be built. Any such difference should be minimized, specially the cultural and linguistic misunderstanding. Over the next few years, employers will need to implement more sophisticated recruitment policies as the global talent pool expands and becoming more complex. They will also need to build a common work culture encompassing similar ethics and values, among people who hail from different culture.
