Title

Role of Supply chain management and Green supply chain management in Steel industry

Abstract

In this paper, we discuss role of the supply chain in today´s steel industry. In the steel industry, the supply chain, apart from actual production, is an extremely complex task requiring the consideration of numerous factors and objectives. The difficulties are emphasized by a heavy production process with sharp fluctuated demand, raw materials supply and also uncertain prices, so that factors of such supply chains may negatively impact steel production. These alternatives reveal trade-offs with respect to competing objectives, such as maximizing profitability, minimizing delivery time, minimizing the cost of raw materials, and minimizing manufacturing disruptions by optimization of the steel supply chain. This paper is concerned different factors of the supply chain in the steel industry; it discusses the roles of the supply chain in the steel industry, and proposes an optimized supply chain and win-win path in visibility across all participants, from steel producers to customer demand. Finally, some results are summarized .There growing need for integrating environmentally sound choices into supply-chain management research and practice. Perusal of the literature shows that a broad frame of reference for Green Supply Chain Management (GRSCM) is not adequately developed. A brief classification to help academicians, researchers and practitioners in understanding integrated GRSCM from a wider perspective is needed. Further, sufficient literature is available to justify such classification. This paper takes an integrated and fresh look into the area of GRSCM. The literature on GRSCM is covered exhaustively from its conceptualization, primarily taking a ‘reverse logistics angle’. Using the rich body of available literature, including earlier reviews that had relatively limited perspectives, the literature on GRSCM is classified on the basis of the problem context in supply chain’s major influential areas. It is also classified on the basis of methodology and approach adopted. The steel industries have a very large number of inputs to deal with including machine components and raw materials and also a large number of vendors. The degree of importance for each component varies and so the inventory also varies. When the steel industry is operational it also becomes the reason for severe pollution of air, water and soil. Thus, the manufacture of steel also leads to the development of air-borne diseases, damage to the marine life and also rending the water as unfit for human use and the depletion of fertility of soil. Finally, the findings and interpretations are summarized, and the main research issues and opportunities are highlighted.
