Rapid growth in industry demands rapid change in technology to improve the products and as well service. To serve such industries we need advance tools and processes. In manufacturing industry tools required a proper strength to serve for a long time as they face very complex and rough surface conditions, which tears and wears down them. The result of this shortens the life of tools and slows down the production. Different techniques are used to strengthen the tool and to increase the surface properties of tool steels. The surface hardening treatments of steel has shown significant improvement of various properties including wear and fatigue resistance. Cryogenic treatment is one of the promising procedures to achieve the long life of many cutting tools. We will discuss the complete procedure and observe the effects on the metallurgical changes in the tool steel on the basis of different soaking periods analyzed on the AISI M35 HSS. Various works on cryogenically treated tool steel shows that micro structural changes are produced in material affecting the tool life. However different soaking periods are observed but the best result found to be at 16 hrs.
