Gender disparity has been a major issue in India’s pursuit for achieving the goal of universal elementary education. This paper aims to review the present situation of the participation of children in elementary education in India, with a special focus on gender equity. The analysis in this paper also through some light on considerable variations in the growth of girls to boy’s enrollment ratio across the states. In many states there has been a significant improvement in girls to boy’s enrollment during 2005-06 to 2014-15. But states such as Haryana Maharashtra, Punjab had not made satisfactory improvement of girls to boy’s enrollment at elementary education level.
