Online privacy is the current focal area worldwide, and more so in India, as the country stands as the second largest internet market in the world. With the rise in ecommerce, marketers are using data to reach target markets with precision, and security from data invasion is a pertinent issue in this context. The research aims at investigating the level of awareness of cookies and cookie disclosure policy amongst net surfers in India. The study also explores whether educated surfers know that they can manage their privacy by rejecting or handling cookies. Also, an effort has been made to find out if cookie policy disclosure discourages many surfers to withdraw from the site due to the fear of a privacy breach. The empirical study reveals that Indian surfers are fairly aware of cookies, although a majority is unaware of third party cookies. Further, most educated surfers tend to drop websites rather than accepting cookies, and elder surfers are more resistant to cookies when compared to younger surfers.
