Thomas Stearn was a groundbreaking 20th century poet who is widely known for his work “ The Wasteland”.Eliot once said,’’a great poet in writing of himself writes his ages”,and to none is this remark more applicable than to Eliot himself. T.S Eliot was born in St. Louis,Missouri, in 1888.The Cocktail Party has its basis in the drama Alcestis of the Greek dramatist,Euripides ,and its basic symbolism “of spiritual death and rebirth” derives from the Greek play. The Cocktail Party was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1949. In 1950 the play had successful runs in London and New York theaters (the Broadway production received the 1950 Tony Award for Best Play.) It focuses on a troubled married couple who, through the intervention of a mysterious stranger, settle their problems and move on with their lives. He spend most of his life in Europe ,dying in London, England , in 1965.
