Title

EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION ON HEAT TRANSFER AND FRICTION CHARACTERSTICS OF A PERFORATED SPHERICAL ELEMENTS IN A PACKED BED SENSIBLE HEAT STORAGE SYSTEM

Abstract

A packed bed consists of a packing element which can be packed tightly or loosely according to the need, and during the charging mode the hot air is being calculated from top to bottom of the bed to the all elements packed inside the bed and the air can be passed out from the lower plenum and when the energy is needed from the system. The direction of the air is reversed and the stored energy is taken back and can be used for the different purposes. An experimental setup has been designed and fabricated in the laboratory. The temperature of the air at different locations and the temperature of the element at various locations of the bed is being measured for different Reynolds Number for different set. Large amount of data has been collected for the analysis of heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of the packed bed. Solid spherical element of concrete and spherical element with perforation and perforation ratio are used to investigate energy stored and energy loss in the storage bed. Nusselt number of storage bed was found maximum at 0.6 perforation ratio at (6) number of perforations.
