In Indian philosophy, Māyā is the very popular concept and one can find this term Māyā used from the Vedas up to the Saivism. Māyāvāda is not at all sudden or abrupt, but it has the firm foundation of the Vedas. To translate “māyā” as “illusion” in the Advaita of Śaṅkara and the word Māyā is derived from the root ‘ma’ to measure or form. Māyā is the principle that makes one thing appears as what it is not. Maya is not real, or unreal, or real and unreal. This article is as far as Śaṅkara’s theory is concerned, which one should be called as Māyāvāda or Brahmavada. The main purpose is served by this article that is his Māyāvāda is not all sudden or abrupt growth and it has a firm foundation of Vedas in spite of the fact that Śaṅkara’s Māyāvāda is not original contribution.
