Title

Usage of Online Food Delivery Apps among Students Residing in Hostels and Working Women Residing in Paying Guest Accomodations

Abstract

In recent years, with economic development in India, the number of people using smart phones and internet has increased. So due to this more people are using online mode of buying various items. Online food delivery apps have been introduced and they provide an easy and convenient way of delivering food to the doorstep of customers. Younger generation is more adapted to technology and more likely to use these apps and specially those residing in hostels, as they do not have access to a variety of food items in the hostel. This study was conducted to identify the food ordering and consumption pattern with the usage of online food delivery apps among students in the age group of 18-24 years residing in hostels and working women in the age group of 22-30 years residing in paying guest accommodations. Two hundred students and one hundred and forty working women participated in the study and the data was collected using a questionnaire. It was observed that the food consumption of nearly half of respondents was increased with the usage of online food delivery apps and fast food consumption had also increased. The most commonly and frequently ordered food items found were pizza, biriyani, paratha, Chinese, burger, sandwich, desserts and chaat. All these foods are high in calories, fat, sugar and sodium. Therefore frequent online ordering of such food items may have a significant impact on their health.
