Title

Conservation and cultivation of Medicinal plants as a means of Sustainable Livelihood in North East India.

Abstract

Plants have been known to be a source of medicines since ancient times and have been an important component of the health care system in India. In Indian systems of medicines most practitioners formulate and dispense their own recipes of medicines of herbal origin. In India, many forms of alternative medicines are available such as the Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Yoga, naturopathy, and homeopathy. Medicinal plants constitute an important natural wealth of a country. They play a significant role in providing primary health care services to rural people. They serve as therapeutic agents as well as raw materials for the manufacture of traditional and modern medicines. The demand for medicinal plants is ever increasing as people are more fascinated towards herbals. Extraction from the wild has its own problems and risks. We need to cultivate for larger production and authenticity. Cultivation will help in conservation of some of our medicinal plants that are being pushed to the danger of extinction. Cultivation of medicinal plants are not only economical but also ecologically safer.
