Isolation of cellulose degrading bacteria from soils of Raigad District region was carried out to assess the diversity of cellulose degrading bacteria. For isolating cellulose degrading bacteria minimal salt media containing filter paper (Whatman filter paper No.1) was used. Total 21 isolates were isolated from soil samples collected from different regions of Raigad district. Preliminary screening of Cellulose degrading bacteria was carried out by testing against congo red indicator. Clear zone around the colony was the indication of Cellulose degradation activity by the bacteria. 11 bacterial isolates showed positive results. As an outcome predominant isolates were identified as Pseudomonas spp. Bacillus sp. The findings show that these microorganisms have significant potential for use in applications for the treatment of cellulose degradation and cellulose related environment pollutants.
