Witchcraft is an old belief. During the Renaissance, in Europe, thousand and thousand people were killed because of this belief. In India, witch-belief is descendent from ancient times. When did witch-belief has started in Assam is undefined. But there are a lot of words such as Xakhina- xakhini or evil cobra, jokhini or evil spirits which are close enough to define a witch, used in Assamese literature. Analyzing all the factors available in Assamese society, it is found that no particular agent is responsible for the influencing witch belief in Assam. Different type mental diseases, religious belief upon religious institutions as well as on priest, personal rivalry are mainly responsible for the continuation of witch-belief in Assamese society.
