factors and barriers influencing the screening tests for cervical Cancer among menopausal women

Abstract

Introduction: Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in the women worldwide and the leading cause of cancer deaths among women in the developing countries . The burden of cervical cancer in India is enormous accounting for about 20 percent of all cancer related deaths in women and is the number one cause of death in the middle age Indian women. Where screening quality and coverage have been high, invasive cervical cancer has been reduced by as much as 90 percent. This indicates the usefulness of screening in the population, but with major barriers towards lower screening coverage. There are no effective, organized population based high-level opportunistic screening programs for cervical cancer in any of the states in India contemporary to developed nations ,due to which routine screening of asymptomatic women have been almost nonexistent .A Several factors influencing cervical cancer screening have been reported which includes lack of awareness, inadequate access to healthcare facility, poorinfra structure in addition to unawareness among the doctors. At rural areas regarding importance of early diagnosis and treatment, existence of alternative medicinal systems, deficient economic and moral support from husband and family and an inappropriate demand for providing cervical cancer screening from the potential beneficiaries could been numerated as the chief causes. The present study title: A study to assess factors and barriers influencing the screening tests for cervical cancer among menopausal women in selected areas. The objective of the study To determine the factors influencing screening tests for cervical cancer amongmenopausal women, to identify the barriers influencing screening tests for cervical cancer among menopausal women, to find out the association of factors and barriers influencing the screening tests for cervical cancer among menopausal women with selected demographic variables. Material and Methods: In present study, researcher adopted non experimental cross sectional descriptive survey research design. Non probability purposive sampling technique was used to select 100 sample. Ethical clearance was taken from Institutional ethics committee. analysis was done mainly using descriptive statistics test, association was done by Fisher's Exact test. Result: In health factor 55% of the menopausal women opined that the screening services is far from their place.& 50% of them stated that it takes long to get a doctor’s appointment. 65% said that privacy important during screening test. 19% of them opined that health providers organize outreach programs on cervical cancer in your area .all of them find medical services are costly. In Economical factor, 15% of menopausal women said that it is not affordable to them & 15% of them had health insurance cover.13% of them were aware of any government scheme for cervical cancer screening. The majority 76% of menopausal women know about cervical cancer.. 44% of them had heard about pap test. 32% of them had previously done the PAP test. As per socio –cultural factors,30% of them stated that cultural beliefs hinder you from going for screening tests. 70% of them opined that cigarette smoking and alcohol intake increase the risk of developing cervical cancer. Conclusion: The health factor majority of them stated that health services is far .50% of them stated that it takes long to get a doctor’s appointment. 65% said that privacy important during screening test As per the economical factor all of them find medical services are costly. 15% of them said that it is not affordable to them & 13% of them were aware of any government scheme for cervical cancer screening. As per knowledge of the women 76% of menopausal women know about cervical cancer. 57% of them know sign and symptoms of cervical cancer.32% of them had previously done the PAP test. As per socio – cultural factors, the 30% of menopausal women stated that cultural beliefs hinder you from going for screening tests. 70% of them opined that cigarette smoking and alcohol intake increase the risk of developing cervical cancer. Recommendation: A similar study can be done conducted in different setting and different target population such as perimenopausal women etc. A study may be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of booklet related cervical cancer and its preventive measures.
