AIM: To study various co-morbidities and prevalence of protein energy malnutrition among dialysis patients OBJECTIVES: To observe various co-morbidities, prevalence of protein energy malnutrition, bio-chemical parameter’s, food frequency among patients undergoing dialysis METHODOLOGY: The sample population (n=40) was randomly chosen from multispecialty hospital, Hyderabad. All the patients were of different age groups, sex, with different co-morbidities. A pre-tested format consisting of patient profile, subjective data, bio-chemical data and a food frequency. RESULT: Among subjects the detailed study identified various co-morbidities such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, anemia, mineral bone disease, tuberculosis, hepatitis c, cardiovascular disease. Various bio-chemical parameters show increased serum creatinine, increased urea, increased phosphorus, decreased hemoglobin among most of the patients. Most of the patients have functional impairment (loss of sub-cutaneous fat, muscle wasting). Food frequency revealed that all the patients consumed cereals, pulses, vegetables, fruits, green leafy vegetables, non-veg but the quantity consumed was less due to lack of appetite and vomiting as a result most of the patients were malnourished which was revealed in functional impairment.
