Title

A STUDY ON SOCIAL INTERACTION AND ACHIEVEMENT IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE AMONG STUDENTS OF ENGLISH MEDIUM SECONDARY SCHOOLS AT MANGALORE TALUK

Abstract

The present ‘Study on Social Interaction and Achievement in English Language among Students of English Medium Secondary Schools at Mangalore Taluk’ is a descriptive survey. The study sample being 400 students, of whom 200 were girls and other 200 were boys, were selected from the target population all English medium high school students of Mangalore taluk. An investigator used his ‘self-constructed’ tool to collect data concerning subjects’ social interactions; however, subjects were also asked by the investigator to write their marks of the previously sat mid-term test results of English language subject. The study used both descriptive and inferential statistics to analyse data collected from subjects. The study presents the statuses of social interactions and achievements in English language subject of students; the significant relationships and differences if any that exist between social interactions and English language achievement or learning among those students. The study came up with the findings, in its general that there is no significant relationship between social interactions and achievement in English language among English medium secondary school students and among male students; however, there is a significant relationship in female students. It also came up the findings that there is significant difference between social interactions and achievement in English language among English medium secondary school students and among male students; however, there is no such significant difference in female students between the two variables. Other findings apart from these have also been presented in this dissertation report. At the end of dissertation report, educational implications and suggestions for further investigations in the same area of study have been provided.
