Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are characterized by fast moving vehicles leading to frequent topology changes. These networks are deployed to provide information about road safety. However, frequent broadcasting of the packets in these networks gives rise to broadcast storm problem (BSP). The work focuses on the reduction of broadcast storm problem in vehicular ad hoc networks. This work proposes a modification to existing selective epidemic broadcast (SEB) algorithm that uses concept of Passive Acknowledgment to reduce the BSP. Proposed work uses received signal strength (RSSI) to determine the urgency of the vehicles to which emergency safety packets (ESM) should be disseminated. The performance of the network was analyzed based on broadcast storm ratio, delay and packet delivery ratio. These parameters have shown significant improvement when compared with SEB algorithm.
