Title

Experimental Study On Mechanical Properties Of Concrete Containing Class F Fly Ash And Ferro Fine Aggregate By Using Taguchi Method

Abstract

The aim of this study is investigate the effect on mechanical properties of concrete containing class F fly ash and ferro fine aggregate by using Taguchi method. Class F fly ash is classified as waste by the production of thermal coal power plants. Ferro fine aggregate is an industrial by product of steel making industries. The Taguchi method uses a special set of arrays called orthogonal arrays, which give the least number of experiments, with as much information as possible about all the variables that affect the result. Concrete test specimens were prepared with 10%, 20%, 30% replacement of cement weight with class F fly ash and 15%, 30%, 50% replacement of natural fine sand weight with ferro fine aggregate. A total of nine numbers of experiments were conducted according to the proposed L9 orthogonal array. The slump cone tests of fresh concrete were conducted. On the hardened concrete unit weight, compressive strength, flexural strength and split tensile strength were determined. Taguchi showed good results with the use of 10% class F fly ash in place of cement, and for 28 days curing mixed with 30% ferro fine aggregate in concrete using Minitab software. The test results proved that the use of class F fly ash reduced the strength of concrete and that the total consumption of ferro fine aggregate increased the strength of concrete.
