Software-defined networking (SDN) is a new field which is gaining popularity among researchers in order to address the need of the data centers. SDN is changing the networks around the world by changing the traditional way of control plane and data plane working. The entire network with SDN is controlled using SDN controller and due to its centralized management, it brings large number of benefits to network industry like customization, faster deployment, troubleshooting etc. which has been discussed in this paper. The most prominent challenges of SDN is security, which has been discussed in detail in this paper. Being inspired by the potential of the SDN, a complete survey on SDN-based Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack in being presented. This paper also included the architecture, working and benefits of SDN. In the end the researcher could have better idea about the directions for future research in SDN.
