Introduction: Acute respiratory infections are one of the most common causes of deaths in the developing countries. This is responsible for four millions of deaths every year. That occur in children under 5 years of age which includes two thirds of deaths in infants. W.H.O. April 1990. Acute respiratory infections & diarrheal diseases for which children are brought to hospitals & health facilities are the major causes of death. In all state & districts with high infant& child mortality rates. According to child survival & safe motherhood (C.S.S.M.) Program.(W.H.O.1992). 13% of children aredie due to acute respiratory infection. Although a majority of Acute Respiratory Infection episodes are self-limiting. Pneumonia is a serious life threatening illness without effective treatment. Pneumonia is the acute infection of the lower respiratory tract. In that fluid accumulation present in the alveoli whichleads to breathlessness & exchange of gases does not take place like normal condition. The present study title: A study to assess the knowledge among the mothers regarding pneumonia in selected areas of Pune city. The objective of the study was to assess 1) To assess the knowledge among mothers regarding pneumonia.,to associate the findings with selected demographic variables. Material and Methods : In present study, researcher adopted Non-Experimental design to assess the knowledge among mothers regarding pneumonia. Non-probability sampling method was used to select samples 200 mothers whose children under 5 years of age in selected urban areas of Pune city.Ethical clearance was taken from Institutional ethics committee. Data analysis was done mainly using descriptive statistics test. Chi-square, Fisher test or P-was used to find the association between knowledge score and selected demographic variables. Result:  Majority (60.5%) of the mothers had average knowledge (Score 6-10). 29% of them had poor knowledge (Score 1-5). Only 10.5% had good knowledge (Score 11-15). Mean score of knowledge was 6.99 with SD of 2.821329 which shows that mothers had average knowledge regarding pneumonia. There is statistically significant association between the knowledge with education and occupation as p values are 0.011743069 and 0.038621219 that are less than 0.05. But there is no association between age, history of hospitalization of child with pneumonia and sources of information about pneumonia as there p-values are more than 0.05. Conclusion: Majority of mothers knew about pneumonia and there was significant association found between knowledge with education level and number of children of mothers Recommendation: It is suggested that the study may be replicated using a larger sample. A similar study may be done to organized education program on care of child with pneumonia and to evaluate the effectiveness. A comprehensive study may be done between rural and urban women about care of child with pneumonia.
