Title

SELECTION OF MATERIAL AND OPTIMISATION OF MAGNETIC SHIELDING FOR RING LASER GYROSCOPE

Abstract

Ring laser gyro (RLG) should have minimum magnetic field interference to give better performance. So, RLG requires magnetic shielding from ambient magnetic fields. The optimizationof shield has been studied based on transverse shielding factor.The performance of the shield was studied at 3 Gauss uniform magnetic field. The study has been carried out by theoretical and finite element methods for single and double layer of three different iron nickel alloys of two thicknesses. The material showing higher efficiency has been selected for testing experimentally. The performance of the shield model used for assembling purpose have also been studied by finite element method for both single and double layered shield enclosures. The results indicate that the shielding effectiveness gradually increases with respect to thickness, configuration and relative permeability of the material. The shielding effectiveness of ideal rectangular shield enclosure is high compared to the experimental model.
