Title

Structure and pattern of change in punjab economy

Abstract

Structural change is a consequence of economic development in all the economies. The structural transformation is one of the important feature of economic development i.e. the re-allocation of resources between sectors that further stimulates development. Therefore, in order to study deeply the structure and pattern of growth in the Punjab economy, the following study is based on three broad sections. The first section is based on brief analysis on global economy in some selected nations of the world; second section deals with the analysis based on Indian economy and the last section covers the detailed analysis of structural change in the Punjab economy. The experience of global economy in terms of structural change has followed the same pattern of primary-secondary and tertiary sector as documented by Kuznets (1966) and other economists of structural change. The Indian economy in general has experienced a maximum growth in the tertiary sector with the passage of time from primary sector followed by secondary sector without symmetrical change in the labour force. This pattern of change in the Indian economy is not in consonance with the experience as observed in developed nations. The study concluded with fact that the pattern of change in the Punjab economy is from primary sector to tertiary sector that has bypassed the secondary sector.
