The term eco-criticism is coined by William Rueckert, in the essay “literature and Ecology: An Experiment in Eco-criticism” in 1978. It defines eco-criticism as, “The application of ecology and ecological concepts to the study of literature because ecology as a science, as a discipline, as the bases for human vision has the greatest relevance to the present and future of the world” (102). Nature and locale play a vital role in the novels of Anita Desai and Margaret Laurence. Application of eco-criticism in earth-centered text gives a new awakening of how locale influences the characters and the story itself.
