The present Thoothukudi District is a part of the erstwhile Tirunelveli District and Madurai Kingdom for a very long time. The turning point in the history of Thoothukudi came in 1744 under the Wallajah Nawab of Arcot. Anvar-ud-din, the Nawab, appointed his agent in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi and governed it as a part of the Southern Province of Arcot. The importance of Thoothukudi district was based on the fact that it was a fertile ground for revenue. On account of the ‘Arcot Debts’, the British interfered with the administration of the Nawab in the Tirunelveli – Thoothukudi. The British sent their forces and stationed a section of their army at Palayamkottai in Tirunelveli – Thoothukudi Region permanently. The Poligars of Arcot Subha were scattered throughout the region between the River Cauveri in the northern side and River Tambaraparani in the southern side. They functioned mostly as a thorn in the flesh of the polity of Arcot Subha from the middle of the sixteenth century to the beginning years of the nineteenth century.
