Title

INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS ON ACHIEVEMENT IN SOCIAL SCIENCE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Abstract

Social Consciousness, or social awareness, is defined as consciousness shared by individuals within a society. It essentially means to be conscious or aware of the problems within a society or community. According to Greenspan (1981),"the term social awareness may be defined as the individual’s ability to understand people, social events, and the processes involved in regulating social events. The emphasis on interpersonal understanding as the core operation in social awareness indicates that this construct is a cognitive component of human competence”. According to De Lecco &Crowford (1974) ‘Achievement is the expectancy of finding satisfaction in mastering challenging and difficult performances’.The quality of performance is the determinant for success in an ever growing competitive world where everyone desires a high level of achievement. In the opinion of Butch (2000), the whole system of education is centered on academic achievement of the students. Achievement means the extent to which a learner is profiting from instructions in a given area learning. This study is undertaken to find the influence of Social Consciousness on Achievement in Social Science among secondary school students. The investigator used Normative Survey Method for the study. The sample consists of 370secondary school students. Social Consciousness Scale was used as tool. The major finding of the study reveals that there exists a significant relationship between Social Consciousness and achievement in social science amongsecondary school students in the whole sample. It can be concluded that there exists no significant difference in the relationship of Social Consciousness andachievement in social science with reference to gender, locality and type of the school.Scatter plot showing that a positive correlation occurs between Social Consciousness andachievement in social science.
