Title

Profile of Women Entrepreneurs under UYEGP (Unemployed Youth employment Generation Programme) – A study in Sivagangai district, TamilNadu

Abstract

There has been a steady increase in the participation of women in entrepreneurial activities indicating the rise in entrepreneurial spirit and immense potential for entrepreneurial development among women. In 2016, an estimated 163 million women were running new businesses in 74 countries around the world. In addition, an estimated 111 million were running established businesses (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Women’s Report 2015). This not only shows the impact of women entrepreneurs across the globe, but highlights their contributions to the growth process. Women entrepreneurs provide income for their families, employment for the community, and products and services that bring new value to the world around them. This Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Women’s Report offers an in-depth view of women who start and run businesses around the world. Entrepreneurial movement among women started late in India and is still in its infancy. Changes in the global and domestic environment have contributed towards the growth of women entrepreneurship in India. A woman enterprise is defined as “an enterprise owned and controlled by a women having a minimum financial interest of 51% of the capital and giving at least 51% of the employment generated in the enterprise to women”. The success of women entrepreneurs differs from district to district, state to state in India.
