The fact that Coleridge is considered the pioneer of modern formalist criticism has been established by Eliot who himself believed in subtle textual study. The three tenets of Coleridge—organic unity, poetic imagery and reconciliation of the opposites have been used both by Eliot and the New Critics in their criticism. Eliot advocates a theory of unity where the value of any work of art is “readjusted” to the whole. The new critics lay great emphasis on imagery which again is traced back to Coleridge who talks about mechanical and organic images. For Eliot, Cleanth Brooks, and J.C. Ransom the image has been regarded as a very important constituent of literary composition. The third tenet i.e. reconciliation of opposites had a great influence on the New Critics. They talk of paradox, ambiguity, and tension which embody the principle of reconciliation by such critics as Brooks, Allen Tate, Blackmur and Ransom.
