Title

OPTIMIZATION ON CYLINDRICAL PIN-FIN ARRAY IN A RECTANGULAR TUNNEL USING TAGUCHI METHOD

Abstract

In this study, the parameters of cylindrical pin fin array in a rectangular duct were investigated using Taguchi method. Conventional test methods are expensive, and it takes more time whereas the Taguchi’s method is very effective in solving such problems. Taguchi method has many advantages in comparison with the conventional experimental design method. In these analyses, the effects of clearance ratio (C/H), Stream wise distance (Sy) and Reynolds number (Re) on the characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop were investigated using Taguchi experimental design method. The L25(5*3) orthogonal array (OA) has been selected as the experimental design plan for the above mentioned three parameters. Signal-to-noise (S/N) analysis was carried out in order to determine the effects of process parameters and optimal levels settings. The optimization was particularly used to find out the optimum increase in Nusselt Number and optimum decrease in friction factor based on turbulent flow. The results show that the Nusselt Number increases, and Friction factor decreases corresponding to the Reynolds number.
