Abstract

Abstract: This dissertation reports the results of a laboratory investigation of the effects of rate of strain on the strength of remolded soil. The soil selected for the purpose of this study is a dredged soil taken from Nishat area of Srinagar. Strain rate has been found to be one of the prominent factors influencing the shear strength parameter of soil. In the practical world, the soils supporting various structures are subjected to varying strain rates which may be low, intermediate and high. Large-scale experimental study on strain-rate effects on the soil in literature supported the conclusion that the shear strength increases with increase in strain-rate. The objective of the current investigation was to study the effect of strain-rate on shear strength parameters of soil. In this study series of monotonic triaxial compression tests were conducted on test soil under unconsolidated undrained conditions at three different cell pressures as 150KPa , 250KPa and 350 KPa. Strain rate was studied from 6mm/min to 0.24 mm/min. Three different size specimen sizes were molded viz. 38 mm dia , 50 mm dia and 75 mm dia and tested at OMC. Influence of strain rate on deviator stress at failure is analyzed in this study. The undrained shear strength in this study is presented in terms of principal stress difference at failure (σ1- σ3 )f. .
