Title

EFFECT OF STRAIN-RATE ON STRENGTH PARAMETERS OF DREDGED MATERIAL FROM DAL LAKE SRINAGAR.

Authors

Abstract

Abstract: Soil presents itself to be one of the most ambiguous, uncertain and dubious material owing to widespread variation of its properties which changes in both spatial and temporal contexts. For design and analysis of any structure supported by soil, the shear strength parameters of the soil are vital and they should be obtained from laboratory and in-situ tests. Since the shear strength parameters are not intrinsic properties of soil, there are a number of factors which affect the estimates obtained from tests, out of which rate of loading or shearing poses to be the most important factors that should be taken in to account while conducting the tests. The shear strength of soil is of special relevance amongst various geotechnical soil properties and it is one of the most essential entities for analyzing and solving different stability problems such as evaluation of earth pressure, bearing capacity of footings and foundations, Earth quick analysis of structures and slope stability or stability of embankments and earth dams. Determining the effect of strain rate on the shear strength of clay soil is essential for such geotechnical problems and this factor should be taken into account. The objective of the current investigation was to study the effect of strain-rate on shear strength parameters (C and Ф ) of soil. In this study series of monotonic triaxial compression tests were conducted on test soil under unconsolidated undrained conditions at three different cell pressures as 150 KPa , 250 KPa and 350 KPa. Strain rate was studied from 6mm/min to 0.24 mm/min. Three different size specimen sizes were molded viz. 38 mm dia , 50 mm dia and 75 mm dia and tested at OMC.

Key Words
