Out of 1.21 billion people, 833 million live in rural areas which account 72.22 percent of total population (Census, 2011). The herculean task of every Government is to eradicate poverty and unemployment problems especially in rural areas. As a result, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is considered as “Silver Bullet” to eradicate these twin chronic problems. The basic objective of the Act is to provide 100 days employment to all rural households willing to do unskilled work at the minimum wage rate fixed under Minimum Wage Act, 1948. The government has invested a huge resource in creating durable and quality assets which can strengthen rural livelihood through the Act. Many villages in South West Khasi Hills District Meghalaya had never dreamt of getting infrastructure development but with the implementation of the Act, roads, concrete footpaths, bridges, water conservation works and assets on livestock promotion have been created which have transform the rural economy to some extent
