Title

Causality between expenditure on social sector and economic growth of Assam: An Empirical analysis

Abstract

The economy of Assam is largely Agriculture based with 69% of the population engaged in it. Assam it is often found to be good performers in terms of social parameters like birth rate, literacy rates, death rate and infant mortality rates. The region like Assam human capital based development is more necessary. The social sector therefore is of prime importance for building up human capital as well as creating new opportunities and avenues. Social sector promotes productivity and technological advancement, thereby generating employment opportunities and increased income, which finally leads to better quality of life. This paper is based on secondary sources relevant informations are collected from Reserve bank of India publication and directorate of economics and statistics, Assam. And the data of expenditure on different heads of social services have been obtained from RBI publications-State finance: A study of budgets. Here all the time series have been deflated to neutralize the impact of changes in prices and are expressed in lakhs rupees at constant 2011-12 prices. Based on these data this paper examined the trend and pattern of public expenditure on social sector of Assam. And also try to analyze the impact of public expenditure on social sector (GSDP) on economic growth of Assam.
