In the era of globalization, the relationship between civil society and the state is getting complex, but the state cannot exists without the presence of civil societies. They facilitate the functioning of the government by acting as mediator between the government and the public. Thus, making the government truely democratic, liberal and welfare oriented. The paper examines the concept of civil society and explains various roles performed by the civil societies with special references of various civil society movements.
