Due to widespread cheating and business malpractices consumerism or consumer protection has arisen. Consumer protection is a group of laws and organisation designed to ensure the right of consumers as well as fair trade, competition and accurate information in the market place .consumer protection laws are a form of government regulation that aim to protect the right of consumers. Despites a number of laws passed to protect the interest of Indian consumers but still consumers are unaware of their privileges and legal protection available to them. Even educated people are cheated by business in a sophisticated way. The basic aim of this study is to examine the awareness level of urban and rural consumers regarding consumer rights and protection policies and to find the problems faced by consumers during redressel process. For this study total 60 respondents were selected, 30 respondents from kanjirappally (rural area) and 30 from Ernakulam (urban area) .The study reveals that both urban and rural consumers are not fully aware about consumer rights and consumer protection policies.
