Abstract Twenty-first century English literature in India has liberated itself from the colonial and post-freedom psyche of the last century. With growing industrial and economic base and multi-national culture India is striving to face new challenges of pride and prejudice. The modern life style is making the generation fun-loving but less humane. Educated youth is tempted to join the Marathon of the society seeking to enjoy fat-packages with administrative and managerial luxury in multinationals-especially abroad. The global scientific wisdom and traditional Indian culture have placed the Indian youth on a cross-road; his is a challenging task of balancing the two contrasting and conflicting traits. Chetan Bhagat comes out with ‘dark, witty’ tales about modern India; focusing on ‘the ethos and isolation of an entire generation’ with an undercurrent of humanity centering on the educated youth it’s humane concerns, struggle and dilemma.
