Society is a collection of genders, with each gender manifested with unique form of identity and control within it. Empowerment of women and economic development are relative, not only does economic progress and involvement of women reduce the gender inequality, but empowering women contributes to all round economic development. Women identity in Indian society is apparently controlled by the social mechanism. Social identity and social control plays a very crucial role in determining the role, status, position, and power of women within the society. The stance that women empowerment is essential even to date, sparks a debate. Former secretary general of United Nations, Mr. Kofi Anan has emphasized on the ‘prerequisite’ condition for achieving gender equality, is universal education for women which will also take care of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Many of the researchers have proved the direct link of education level with the status of women in the family. Women’s autonomy over financial-independence and decision making process are equally important components of women empowerment along with access to resources. This paper reviews the literature on both sides of the empowerment and development nexus.
