Ayurveda emphasizes the need of Shodhana (purification / detoxification) for poisonous herbal, animal and mineral drugs. The drugs which are poisonous should be administered to the patients after proper Shodhana process. This process enhances the therapeutic efficacy and quality of the crude drugs and makes them potent and less toxic. The knowledge of traditional purification/detoxification methods is mentioned in various Ayurvedic documents and text. The Gunja seeds were detoxified using process of shodhana,the unshodith seeds and the detoxified seeds of gunja were tested for chemical and toxicological profile.. The results showed that the toxicity of Abrus precatorius seeds was reduced after Shodhana process.LC-MS studies,reveals that the toxic principle, Abrin is totally diminished in the Shodith gunja seeds. The present work gives support to the traditional knowledge which utilizes shodhana process in preparing formulations containing one or more toxic medicinal plant ingredients.
