Title

SIMULATION OF SEDIMENT YIELD USING SWAT MODEL IN GILGEL-GIBE III RESERVOIR, OMO GIBE BASIN OF ETHIOPIA

Authors

Abstract

This study was conducted to quantify the sediment yield of Gilgel-Gibe III reservoir using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. The SWAT hydrological model was calibrated for the period of 1998 to 2004 and validated for the period of 2005 to 2008 based on six parameters identified during sensitivity analysis. The SWAT hydrological model was also used to delineate the Gilgel-Gibe watershed. The watershed was further divided into 27 sub watersheds and 119 hydrologic response units (HRUs). Calibration, validation and model efficiency were performed at Abelti gauging station using Sequential Uncertainty Fitting 2 (SUFI-2, version 2) within SWAT-CUP. The calibration and validation outputs for simulation showed a good model performance. Accordingly, coefficient of determination (R²) was found to be in the range of 0.90 to 0.98 and Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (ENS) was ranged between 0.88 and 0.96, i.e, they were found in an acceptable range. The sediment yield in the catchment in the years 1998 to 2008 was found to be 334.8ton/ha/year which is equal to 17.17M tons/year. For the next fifty years, the sediment accumulation in the reservoir will be 858.5 million tons.
