North East India comprises of the eight states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. The region`s economy is generally characterized by low per-capita income, low capital formation, in-adequate infrastructure facilities, geographical isolation and communication bottleneck. The analysis of trends of the economic and health indicators of the North-Eastern states reveal that the NSDP has grown at a rate of 14.3 percent during 1981-2010. The IMR has declined at a rate of 2.2 percent while the Birth rate and Death rate declined at a rate of 1.6 and 1.7 percent respectively. The Life Expectancy of the North-East region grows at a rate of 0.9 percent. The anaysis of pre and post Liberalization period reveals that the increment in NSDP and Life Expectancy of the North-East was more significant after the liberalization of the Indian economy. The decline in birth rate and infant mortality rate, although almost the same was more significant before the liberalization of the Indian economy. This disturbing fact can be due to the sudden increase in population after the 1900s.
