Method: Metronidazole floating gel system is prepared by dissolving viscosity forming agent HPMC in distilled water to which calcium carbonate and metronidazole was added then dissolved sodium alginate in distilled water then add to the HPMC solution and volume is adjusted to 100ml then evaluate the prepared formulae for Drug content, pH measurement, gelling capacity, floating ability, in vitro drug release behavior. Results: The formulation variable such as viscosity enhancing polymer i.e sodium alginate affects the formulation viscosity, floating behavior, in vitro drug release, gelling capacity. Conclusion: The prepared gastric specific in situ gel of metronidazole which is used in peptic ulcer diseases caused by H.pylori was prepared by HPMC and sodium alginate as release retardant it was found that in increase concentration of polymer decrease drug release .
