Title

Retrospective Study and Assessment of Community Awareness on Rabies in and Around Hosaena

Abstract

Abstract : A retrospective study was conducted on prevalence of rabies in and around Hosaena town from November 2013 to March 2014 in order to estimate the suspected rabies cases in humans and animals. In addition to retrospective study, a questionnaire was also prepared and circulated to 125 peoples to assess the people’s awareness of the disease in the area. 320 animals were suspected cases of rabies during the study period and the result indicates that the high percentage was observed in dogs (65.31%), followed by bovine (11.25%), equines (10%), ovine (7.19%), caprine (4.69%) and feline (1.56%). It is also evident from the study that incidence was more in male animals (51.40%) than females (48.60%). The study clearly indicates that among the reported human suspected rabies cases 103 (47.69%) were in age of 0-14 years followed by 15-44 years, 93 (43.06%) and >44 years 20(9.23%). In Hosaena Nigist Eleni Mohammed Hospital a total of 214 people within period 2008-2013 received anti-rabies post exposure treatment, which are bitten by dogs. Of the total 109 (50.93%) were in males and 105 (49.07%) were in females. It is also very clear that maximum number of cases coming to hospital were in the year 2012 (21.97%) followed by 2009 (21.03%), 2011 (20.09%), 2010 (14.02%), 2013 (12.15%) and 2008 (10.75%). This study reveals that rabies is prevalent in the target area which may be because of large number of unvaccinated stray dogs. Incidence of rabies in human being was observed to be more in people living in villages than those living in urban area. In conclusion, the disease is controlled by proper distribution of vaccine to all areas on time, killing of stray dogs and training of community to vaccinate their dogs and kept their dogs indoor.
