Title

A Comparative Study between Prefabricated and Conventional Method of Construction for Airport hangar

Abstract

With development and innovation of new technologies in civil engineering, prefabrication continue to grow in building and bridge construction. Execution of various works effectively, efficiently and economically remains a challenge to meet the emerging demand on quality. But with the conventional type of construction the speed and efficiency cannot be achieved. Hence alternative methods of construction need to be explored. Prefab construction is one of the best method by which the total time of construction and cost can be reduced. Prefab construction has its own advantages such as it reduces the on site construction period; the erection is easy with development of new technology and equipment.Construction of hangars in airport is a specialised area that need faster execution with precision and quality. However in order to arrive at a logical decision a study needs to be carried out by comparing between various conventional and prefabricated procedures of them. It is anticipated that prefabricated airport hangars are slightly higher in cost as compared to conventional airport hangars but higher cost of prefabricated hangars can be redeemed in form of low maintenance cost and longer life .On the other hand, construction time of prefabricated airport hangars is less than conventional hangars. Structural performance, fire resistance and acoustic performance of prefabricated hangar is higher andexpected to be better than conventional hangars. Hence a comprehensive study on this area shall be beneficiary to airport authorities in policy formulation in future.
