Osborne in his play Look Back in Anger has tried to present the angry young man warts and all. It is the warts which are often over looked even though they are serious and painful for those who surround him. It is these short comings of character and Jimmy Porter’s selfishness and self-centeredness that I shall attempt to unravel because our sympathy for him prevents us from making a fair assessment of his character. If he has to suffer humiliation in the British society because of his ordinary background, it makes little sense that he should harm his wife, Alison, and insult her family members. The reasons for his liaison with Helena are simple and can be explained in a single word: flirting. Jimmy has no respect for women and from the feminist point of view he appears despicable.
