Title

CFD Analysis for Corrugated Plate Solar Water Heater System

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to design and manufacture a new storage domestic water heater with solar collector. In this project integrated solar/collector type of water heater is designed, the flat absorber plate is replaced by corrugated shaped absorber plate. The corrugated shaped absorber plate will enhance the rate of heat transfer between the plate and water in contact. The proposed flat plate collector is designed and fabricated by local available materials. In present work 105L of the collector is designed and developed the plate area designed is about 1.5m2 Moreover, in the present work a simple CFD model of the proposed design of the flat plate collector is presented which includes all the modes of heat transfer convection, conduction and radiation from the glass cover, absorber plate water and bottom of the flat plate collector. For the sake of simplicity, the side loss from the collector is not considered the heat capacity of the glass cover and the absorber plate is neglected and the transient state conditions are considered. The proposed CFD model is experimentally validated by conducting an experiment in the climate of Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India. It is seen that the experimental values are reasonably close to the theoretical values the maximum percentage deviation between the experimental and theoretical values are about 14%. This may be due to approximation in the values of the convective coefficient and may be due to instrumental errors. Further it is seen that the collector is working reasonably well in the climate of Raipur for one day observation (24hours) during the month of November when the ambient temperature varies between 25.96˚C to 33.98˚C and the maximum solar radiation for day is about 630W/m2 the maximum temperature of water reached in the flat plate collector is about 62.01֯C.
