Title

ESTIMATION OF CARCINOGENIC COMPOUNDS IN WATER IN PERIYAPATTINAM OF RAMANATHAPURAM DISTRICT

Abstract

Abstract: Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Carcinogens are substances that give rise to cell changes that eventually lead to tumor growth and cancer. A carcinogen is a substance that is capable of causing cancer in humans or animals. The foods we eat can affect our risk of developing certain types of cancer. Diet is just one of the lifestyle factors that influence the risk of developing cancer. Objectives: To select the specific area where incident of cancer is high and to collect the samples for estimating the carcinogenic substances. Method: Estimate the carcinogenic toxins in Drinking water and sea water in periyapattinam of Ramanathapuram District. Tap water and well water was commonly consumed by majority of the people in Ramanathapuram district. The compounds like the Hexavalent chromium, Trihalomethane, cadmium and acrylamide are identified as a common carcinogen in water. Periyapattinam is located in the coastal belt of Gulf of Mannar, where in the consumption of seafood was very high among the people of this area. It turns out that the high level of toxic chemicals like mercury, lead and nickel in seawater was causing cancer in fishes. People consumed that fishes have the high risk of developing intestinal and urinary cancers. Result: The selected water sample was analysed for Hexavalent chromium, Trihalomethane, cadmium, acrylamide by APHA 21st Edi : 2005 and EPA 5030c method. The seawater was anaylsed for the presence of Lead, Nickel and Mercury using APHA 21st edi: 2005. The carcinogenic substances like Hexavalent chromium, Trihalomethane, cadmium and acrylamide were absent in drinking water. Although the river water was chlorinated in the common points, carcinogens were found to be BDL. The carcinogenic components like mercury, lead, nickel were absent in Seawater. Conclusion: The chance of causing cancer due to these above substance contamination is low.
