Title

ATTITUDES AND BELIEFS AMONG YOUNG ADULTS TOWARDS PURCHASING SPECTACLE AND VISITING OPTOMETRY PRACTICES IN INDIA

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background : Very little information are found about the expectations and about the health values that consumers in optometry practices hold about having eye examinations and purchasing spectacles. Unmet expectations are the major causes of consumer dissatisfaction. This study identified different types of attitudes and beliefs held by young adults towards purchasing spectacle and visiting optometry practices in India Method: A total of 101 Participants aged between 18-35 years are recruited on the basis of convenient sampling from different optometry practices situated in Gurugram,India.Participants included on this study were from different parts of India. A questionnaire was developed for the purpose of this study. Questionnaires were accompanied by a cover letter explaining the purpose of the study. Attitudes and beliefs were assessed with a series of 21 questions regarding: Attitudes and beliefs towards visiting opticians/optometrist; attitudes towards spectacles and maintaining healthy eyesight; beliefs and attitudes towards lens details and attitudes and beliefs towards communication and clinical skills of the optician/optometrist. The responses were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS)software. Result: Five factors were identified and they were labeled as style, vision, avoiding, seeking and interpersonal skills. Style is the importance of appearing fashionable or stylish, and desiring approval from others. Averages of 42.48% responses were found for the factor ‘style’. Vision defines client’s attitudes towards obtaining clear vision and to maintaining healthy eyesight. Averages of 36.63% responses were found for the factor ‘vision’. Avoiding is the difficulties associated with visiting opticians and purchasing new spectacles. Averages of 31.33% were identified for the factor ‘avoiding’. Seeking is the desire for information on the technical details of lenses. Averages of 81.2% were scored for the factor ‘seeking’. Interpersonal skills is the consumer’s expectation towards clinical and communication skills from the optometrist/optician which got an average score of 45.94%. Conclusion: Practitioners could use these different individual traits for identification of the information to meet the needs and address the expectations of individual clients. This can make the information provided more relevant according to the personality of different clients, and could enhance client satisfaction.
