Farmers' suicide has been a recurring phenomenon in India. Over three lakh farmers have committed suicides in various parts of India. While many have attributed the current farmers' suicide to the economic model followed by India in the wake of the Economic Reforms of 1992 another group of scholars describe farmers' suicide as a repercussion of the natural forces such as floods and droughts. Both of these viewpoints are useful in understanding the current Agrarian crisis but not adequate enough to explain the distress in totality. This paper thus tries to put forth various perspectives on the farmers' suicides ranging from economic, social, environmental and political to bring forth a clearer and holistic understanding about the causes of farmers' suicides.
